What the Shark can’t see
by Thomas Vignaud
There are a lot of Blacktip reef sharks in Moorea, but they probably have never seed the island... In this photo we are between two worlds. Lucky we are that we can see both!
Equipment: Canon EOS 400D
Thomas Vignaud
Hi, I'm a marine biology student in France, and I'm actually working on sharks. I'm professional diver, and I really love underwater photography, in scuba diving and in freediving.

I’d love to see the unedited version. Its a nice shot but doesn’t look very realistic anymore.

thanks for this photo of the day.
It’s a very hard photo to do, but it was real. The problem is probably from the sand, which is going down in this place (the ground is not flat but do deeper and deeper).
I only have a 6″ dome port, so the surface look very out of focus (too close).
5 meters after the shark, there is a pass with so much current : the water really have a wonderfull color.
I agree this shot looks unreal, but it’s seriously possible to do it, I have others not so good because the focus is on the shark OR on the island, never on both

What a fantastic shot! I love the fuzzy top water! The colors go wonderfully with each other as well! The title is also very clever. What an interesting shot! Where was it taken? Great job Thomas!

Yes it looks a little surreal but I guess it’s possible to capture something like this with the right equipment and the right timing. The colors look very well balanced but the shark looks almost out of the water. I still love this shot.

Fantastic Shot. I think we should believe in our eyes when we see a good image. ;-( I have seen lots of Thomas’s shots and they are all beyond doubt, of the highest order.
Well done Thomas just keep the juices flowing.
The reason we are not seeing the air water interface, in my view is probably because of a shallow DOF which has caused it to go totally out of focus – giving the impression that it may have been shopped out.

haha
it dint occured to me as photoshopped as it would be pretty average for a photoshopped as the blending isn’t well done.
I guess each sees what they wish to see.
I love the concept and composition of the photo though…
how do you study marine biology of sharks in france? do you have to go to the tropics?

It’s a crazy shot, very impressive, beautiful, you have to responde to the people that do not believe it’s real with tecnichal arguments.

The water is so clear I thought they were floating in air at first. Very pretty.

I much appreciate it when a photographer interacts and responds to comments and queries. Thanks for that Thomas, sometimes it makes it easier to understand a particular image for varying reasons. An interesting shot.
Renee
Amazing photo Thomas! thanks for sharing

Yeah, I echo what Ann said earlier – thanks for responding and explaining a little more about the shot.

A technically difficult shot but worth it. Sharks have a wonderful world of their own beneath the sea that we rarely get a glimpse at. The Earth is an amazing place.
