Puffins Showing Affection

by Todd Kwiczak

This shot was taken at the cliffs of Hermaness in the Shetland Islands. You can hear the repeated tapping of beaks of mates showing affection.

Very nice. Very close, very colorful and the scene is just lovely. I do think the left bird’s chest is a wee bit burnt and also you overdid the sharpening just a little. Anyway, other than that it’s a great picture!

Great shot! I love how bright and colourful their beaks and eyes are. The blue sky behind the puffins is fantastically magical. Keep up the good work Todd!

The Atlantic Puffin is the official bird of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada- my home. About 95% of all North America’s puffins breed here. The largest puffin colony in the western Atlantic (225,000 pairs) can be found at the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Nice shot of these great birds from the Atlantic’s eastern shores. Puffins also called sea parrots (look at the beaks) and clowns of the sea (look at the plumage and beak colours.)

Very nicely done, Todd! It is so good to see the beauty of the natural world portrayed through new photographer’s eyes! The contrasts and colours are fabulous… Congrats on POTD!

Lovely colors and the close up details of the beak and feathers are a sight one rarely has a chance to see.
