Champagne Pool

by Will Burrard-Lucas

The Champagne Pool is found in the Wai-O-Tapu geothermal area of New Zealand. The lake is one of the largest hot springs in the area. It is roughly circular with a diameter of 65m and a depth of 62m. The surface temperature of the water is 74 deg. C and bubbles of carbon dioxide can be seen continuously rising to the surface, giving the pool its name. The pool has a distinctive orange edge, caused by the minerals orpiment and realgar, both sulphides of arsenic.
Equipment: Canon EOS 1D MK III, 16-35mm f2.8, tripod

A great vista of our mother Earth. I particularly like the different zones of color, though the framing can do with some tweaking, esp. the upper left quadrant.

Nice composition using curves. Vivid colors. Sharp detail on the rock and edge combined with mellow softness of the smoke and sky.

This picture has a lot of texture. The lines in the stone are very clear. contrast white the texture in the orange rim and the steam cloud. Looks like it goes on for ever. Great picture!
