by Partha

This photograph was taken at a remote village at Malpara, Birbhum, West Bengal, India. She lost her Husband years ago and now live in a joint family with other family members. She is poor in wealth but that cannot diminish her smile/laugh. She can still laugh like a child. We all have a child within.

I work with elders and love the life that is etched within the wrinkles. You have captured and titled this beautiful face perfectly. May we see the child within all of our elders. Thank you for showing the beautiful wrinkles.

Lovely picture but ironic; this lady obviously still loves life, it seems unfair that she had to get old.

It’s not unfair that she has to get old, we all do if we are lucky enough, she just proves that the old still love life.

Delightful… a reminder that in finding the blessings in life we put a smile like that on our own faces. To capture the gift is to be given it as well. This is the place to comment upon a phenomonon I have noticed. It is true that some people are far too animated to be captured well in still photography, though it is not impossible… just requires a lot of film. With the exception of those few “animated” faces, most people almost always dislike photographs of themselves. Part of my “mission” as a casual recorder of events, became to remind people upon giving them their photographs and hearing the same old comment, that those who love them and know them see only someone they know and love. Perhaps we should view ourselves with the same love and kindness we extend to others.

Very strong portrait. Brings to light the Toll of adversity that people face in rural India and Yet still remain hopeful and happy. Really a celebration of life and its intrepid character, always victorious.
On a technical standpoint the decision to go black and white was really good, It brings into focus the lines of time on her face and her happy expression. High contrast is helpful.Colour would have been a Distraction. Great tonal detail.

This face tells loads of stories and is therefore very interesting. I think it was a good decision to shoot it in b&w.
