Ta Prohm

by Stefan Sonntag

It is this huge tree that holds together some of the ruins at this plaza in the centre of Ta Prohm. Many temples of the Angkor complex near Siem Reap, Cambodia, are lacking sound statics. Where trees don't come as a help you'll find many walls, doors and windows heavily distorted. When there, make sure to read some of the description plates from the reconstruction teams explaining the statics of many buildings.

This seems so surreal! I see that you are an animation artist, is this actually a real photo or an animation you have made? Either way it is really cool!

Fantastic shot. Unbelievable how this tree has grown over the man-made structures. You framed it very well and the composition is perfect. I think it was a very good decision to make this a b&w picture. I also like the low POV a lot.

A fantasmagory. Nature is a great artist, your picture is a proof.

Wonderful framing and an amazing subject. I have been there and believe it gives one a really spooky feeling! like those movies about ghosts and trees snaring people.
Regarding colour, the image is not purely B&W but has a very faint hint of color. I believe full colour or high contrast Monochrome would have been would have been better. Can you tell your thinking behind it Stefan?

Amazing shot, almost like something out of ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’. Beautiful, yet surreal.

Great framing! I have wanted to travel to Cambodia ever since I saw trees such as this reclaiming the ground on which men had constructed.

Good shot!!

This looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. The roots look like legs, the lower branches the arms and the leaves the hair. Cool shot.

Nature is truly incredible. That tree is so amazing… funny how it holds up the ruins.

This is a sight most of us will never have the opportunity to see. The tree is shaped so oddly, and your explanation of it makes this all the more interesting to view. Thanks, Stefan.
