Along Came the Heron

by Charlene Burge

One foggy morn I was walking along Bodega Head, looking down at the flowers and watching for a nice composition. When I looked up I found this guy--standing there just as pretty as a picture. He allowed a few snaps and then meandered away, mousing I imagine. While I'm not a huge fan of the horizon bisecting the neck look, I thought he was just as pretty as can be and the photo turned out nicely, so....here he is. ;-)

If the greenish cast is corrected then it would look even more wonderful

Well he does have a very elegant look about him.

It’s still a wonderful capture, even with the bissected neck! We can’t have it all, although we would like to!

Wild creatures are always a challenge to photograph; to get a heron so close up is quite an achievement.

Nice DOF, well done. Those thin legs under massive body always make me smile…

I tried myself to capture these gray-herons.They dont stand still to long.this is a great shot. I like that the background is smaller than the bird itself it give the feeling that the bird is breater than life itself. Did you lay down on the ground? how far away was you from the heron?

I love waiting and watching great blue herons. They’re so graceful, especially when they’re hunting. The blurred horizon doesn’t detract from the bird–at least not for me. I love these types of surprise moments–going for flowers and ending up with a great wildlife photo! Nice work, Charlene.
