Neversink Pit

by Brian Masney

Two cavers ascend out of the 162' Neversink Pit in Alabama. Photos do not give this place justice. In the summer time, there are glow worms in the walls of the pit. It is best to go there on a clear night. Rappel to the bottom and sit in the middle of the pit for about 15-20 minutes with your lights off. You will see the entire pit glowing once your eyes adjust. Get on rope in the dark and ascend up the rope with your headlamp off. It is an amazing experience to see the walls glowing below, beside and above you. If it is a clear night, the stars make it an even better experience.

The cave will be a big adventure.I would certainly try to capture that glow worms in the dark using a shutterspeed or so.fIRST START WITH MAYBE 5 SEC AND THEN MOVE ON TO 30 SEC.

Fantastic photo and perspective–really does convey the scale because of the two tiny figures. Sounds like an awesome experience! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Wow!! What a shot. Do you think you can get a nighttime shot? It would be awesome to see the glowing. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of this place. Would love to see it, but there is not enough money in the world to pay me to go down there!! HA HA Keep up the good work and thanks so much for sharing with us.

Love it! This is a great shot. The tiny humans dangling from the rope, provide a good scale.

What are they hanging off if they are coming down the centre rather than the sides?
