Black Grouse

by Mart Smit

Last week we went to the black grouses in Sweden. To photograph black grouse you must be very early. They start with their lekking behaviour four o'clock am. Then you must wait till the sun is above the horizon but then you have beautiful warm light and maybe some good black grouses in the lek.
Equipment: Canon EOS 30D + Canon 300/2.8 + 2x extender

My name is Mart Smit, I was born in 1991 in Lutjewinkel. That's a very small village in the northern part of the Netherlands, I still live there. I am a student at a secondary school. My favourite hobby is nature photography but I like also doing all kind of sports and working on my website. I'm a member of "Objectief" a Dutch Nature Photographers Union. At a early age, I was already interested in nature. When I was about ten years old, I took all kind of pictures with my fathers equipment, but now I have my own. In 2004 I won a price in the Argus Nature Photography competition in Belgium and that gave me the possibility to buy some excellent equipment. The Canon EOS 20D and a Canon 100-400 5.6 L IS. Most of my pictures are made in my neighbourhood, in our garden or around the farm of my grandparents.

Hi,

Well done and wishing you continued success.

As an aside, I don’t believe there is any such thing as a lek.

Nicely timed and beautiful contrast of colour. Well done.

In reply to the above post, lekking is where males and females gather to perform displays and mate. a lek is merely a site where they perform the rituals.

Thanks for this colorful photo, as well as the background information on the Black Grouse. You’re a dedicated photographer to get out there at 4 a.m., and your effort paid off well. Very nice work!

Simple but very nice. It’s well composed and sharp.

Like the way the background blurring shows off this bird.
