Baby’s Day Out
by Shashank Jain
Red-wattled Lapwing (nestling)
Vanellus indicus
Manchinabele Dam Area, near Bangalore
This dude had perhaps come out from its nest the first time. I don't know if it is a normal behavior or if it was out by accident. Its parents seem to be scouring the whole area looking for him with their non-stop did-he-do-it calls. But its pretty difficult to find a 3cm tall baby when its so well camouflaged. This baby could neither fly nor shout but boy, could he make a run for it! I got only a few shots with him running all around making it tough to capture on camera.

My interest in photography was in a dormant condition most of my life and then I got hold of a Nikon D70 in 2004 and haven't looked back since.

Wonderful capture

Excellent capture of the elusive creature. I like the way he’s looking round at the camera and the shallow depth of field isolates him well.

Young birds get exhausted and dehydrated quickly in hot climes. I hope you did’nt cause too much distress.

Brilliant! What a dainty little fellow he is – I hope he got back to the nest safely

He looks like he’s toddling right along. You’ve chosen the perfect title for this image, Shashank. Very nice work!
