Brown Bear

by Ken Conger

Our Virginia Boy Scout Troop 518 took a trip of a lifetime. We did fundraisers for two years in order to visit several of the National Parks in Alaska. Our goal was to do some remote camping, view some incredible scenery and wildlife. The last park we visited was Katmai National Park. The salmon were running during our three day visit and the scouts were able to watch the Brown Bears catch fish at the falls. With camera in tow was hoping to capture a photograph of a salmon in the air just before a bear clamped down on the fish. Happy with the results and hope you enjoy the image.
Equipment: Canon Mark IIN with 400mm/2.8

Absolutely amazing, Ken! This wooly guy hasn’t sunk his teeth into his catch yet – what timing on your part! I hope you’ve framed this as a memento of your trip. Great shot.

This kind of thing has been happening for many hundreds of thousands of years, you’ve captured it wonderfully well! Great job.

This must be my favorite earthshot, just wonderful, how close were you? Altyhough that bear has eyes only for the salmon!

Su,
Appreciate the kind comment. I used a 400mm lens with a 1/4x converter so as to frame the shoulder and head of the bear for this photo. I was 70-80 yards away.
