Red Squirrel Pose

by Mart Smit

This is a wild red squirrel that was holding a gnarled, silver stump. The squirrel was one of four that were playing around my hide in a Norwegian forest. It suddenly stopped its antics and posed for me in the early evening.
Equipment: Canon EOS 10D with Canon 100-400mm lens

My name is Mart Smit, I was born in 1991 in Lutjewinkel. That's a very small village in the northern part of the Netherlands, I still live there. I am a student at a secondary school. My favourite hobby is nature photography but I like also doing all kind of sports and working on my website www.martsmit.nl. At a early age, I was already interested in nature. When I was about ten years old, I took all kind of pictures with my fathers equipment, but now I have my own. In 2004 I won a price in the Argus Nature Photography competition in Belgium and that gave me the possibility to buy some excellent equipment. The Canon EOS 20D and a Canon 100-400 5.6 L IS. Most of my pictures are made in my neighbourhood, in our garden or around the farm of my grandparents.

Hoi Mart,

Ik kende deze foto al van oa je eigen werk. Maar wel erg leuk dat deze foto als Earthshot vandaag wordt verzonden.

Mart, this is an adorable shot. Crystal clear. I love Canon photography, and you obviously know how to use your equipment.

About a 1,5 years ago my parents bought a postcard in Berlin and it featured this photo of yours. :) I believe your shot was a winning image from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Compo from the BBC in 2005, right? I think you shot it before your 14th birthday. Impressive. My parents bought the postcard at a photography convention and they were impressed with your picture as you shot it at such an early age. Like my parents I think it’s a very good photo. I still have that postcard lying somewhere around. :)
