Breakable Porcelain Fungus
by Mart Smit
This young fungus is as shiny, translucent and exquisite as its name suggests. Mart found it on a rotting beech tree in a forest close to his home in northern Holland. “The weather was so erratic,” he says, “one moment cloud, the next sun”. Just as he had set up his tripod and fixed an extender to his lens, the sun burst through and bathed the fungus in light. “The insect landing was the added bonus.”
Equipment: Canon EOS 20D with 300mm f2.8 lens and 2x extender and tripod.
Mart Smit
My name is Mart Smit, I was born in 1991 in Lutjewinkel. That’s a very small village in the northern part of the Netherlands, I still live there.
I am a student at a secondary school.
My favourite hobby is nature photography but I like also doing all kind of sports and working on my website www.martsmit.nl.
At a early age, I was already interested in nature. When I was about ten years old, I took all kind of pictures with my fathers equipment, but now I have my own.
In 2004 I won a price in the Argus Nature Photography competition in Belgium and that gave me the possibility to buy some excellent equipment.
The Canon EOS 20D and a Canon 100-400 5.6 L IS.
Most of my pictures are made in my neighbourhood, in our garden or around the farm of my grandparents.

Awesome shot! The tree looks like a rocky cliff. Contrast is amazing too! Nature is very fascinating, and your photographic insight into it makes me wish to visit that forest near the ocean.

  7. Anurag Anurag Says:

great shot, very delicate tonal gradation on the fungus in stark contrast with the black background makes for a very visually apealling image, and, the starburst formed by the highlights are just awesome. Just get rid of that fly.
