Wave
by Gilbert Weidinger
Entrance to the “Wave” in Southern Utah, USA, in September 2002. Thunderstorms a couple days earier resulted in this pool of water blocking the entrance. We explored the area barefooted, since the fine structures of sandstone forming the wave are very delicate, they would crumble under boots. I have been to many beautiful places, but this is in my opinion the most amazing of them all. The combination of shapes and colors of these rocks is just mindblowing.

Since I started to take pictures a couple years ago, I have learned to see my surroundings much more intensively. That’s what I like most about photography: that it opens one’s I to the beauty of the world. That’s why I also mainly take pictures of nature. Because I feel most alive when I’m standing somewhere on a windswept ridge in the mountains before sunrise to see the beautiful colors transform the landscape into a surreal, magical place. And I love taking pictures because it’s like a treasure hunt: Where do I find another great photo?
I shoot both digital and on Fuji Velvia Slide Film.

I’ve lived in Seattle, USA, for the last 5 years. Now I’m in Dresden, Germany, where I work as a scientist.

Wow, what an excellent photo. The southwestern US is one of my favorite places on the planet., and this shot really captures how visually stark and fascinating the area can be.

  4. Jos Smos Says:

These rocks are pretty well known. They appear a lot in several stock-photography libraries.

You say you had to walk there bare-footed?

In southern France, Roussillon en Provence, there are similar rocks, which also attract loads of photographers eager to take a nice picture of it.

I have been warned there for the sand and the dust. Those rocks over there exist of red ocres, which could be irritating to your skin. Isn’t that also the case in the place where this picture was taken?

    By the way, nice picture!

Wow! a very peculiar photo and a beautiful one at the same time. I have never seen any rocks like these before. The rocks go great against the brightness of day, especially the rocks colours. Great photo. Well done!
